The Shops and Establishments Act of each state regulates working hours, holidays, wages and conditions for employees in shops, offices, restaurants, warehouses and other commercial places. Registration is usually required within 30 days of starting the business.
Each state has its own rules:
- some states (such as Delhi and Maharashtra for small units) need only an online intimation for businesses with no or few employees
- most states issue a registration certificate that must be displayed at the premises
- some certificates need periodic renewal, while others are valid for the life of the business
