How the GST calculator works
Adding GST to a price: GST = amount × rate ÷ 100, and the total is the amount plus GST. For ₹10,000 at 18%, GST is ₹1,800 and the total is ₹11,800.
Removing GST from a GST-inclusive price: taxable value = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). For ₹11,800 at 18%, the taxable value is ₹10,000 and the GST inside it is ₹1,800.
CGST, SGST and IGST
| Supply | Tax charged | Example on ₹1,800 GST |
|---|---|---|
| Within the same state | CGST + SGST, half each | ₹900 CGST + ₹900 SGST |
| To another state | IGST, the full amount | ₹1,800 IGST |
| Within a union territory | CGST + UTGST | ₹900 + ₹900 |

Questions, answered
How do I calculate GST from a total amount?
Divide the total by (1 + rate/100) to get the taxable value, then subtract it from the total. For ₹1,180 at 18%: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 taxable value and ₹180 GST. Use “Remove GST” in the calculator to do it instantly.
Are the 12% and 28% GST slabs still used?
From 22 September 2025, most items in the 12% slab moved to 5% and most in the 28% slab moved to 18%. Luxury and sin goods moved to a new 40% rate. A few special rates, like 3% on gold, continue.
When is IGST charged instead of CGST and SGST?
IGST applies when the supplier and the place of supply are in different states — for example, a seller in Delhi shipping to a buyer in Mumbai. Within one state, the tax is split equally into CGST and SGST.
Do I need GST registration to charge GST?
