What do you sell?
GST registration turnover limits
You must register once your aggregate turnover in a financial year crosses the limit for your state. Aggregate turnover includes taxable, exempt and export sales across India, for all businesses under the same PAN.
| Business | Most states | Lower-limit states |
|---|---|---|
| Only goods | ₹40 lakh | ₹20 lakh in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Puducherry, Sikkim, Telangana, Uttarakhand |
| Services, or goods and services | ₹20 lakh | ₹10 lakh in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura |
When GST is compulsory regardless of turnover
- Selling goods to another state (inter-state supply of goods)
- Selling goods through an e-commerce operator such as Amazon or Flipkart, with limited relief for small intra-state sellers since October 2023
- Casual taxable persons, such as exhibition sellers from another state
- Businesses liable to pay tax under reverse charge
- E-commerce operators and people who must deduct or collect tax at source
- Non-resident taxable persons and input service distributors
You must apply within 30 days of becoming liable. Registering voluntarily is allowed at any time.
Questions, answered
Is GST registration free?
Yes. The government charges no fee. DigiFiling's professional fee for preparing, filing and following up on your application is ₹1,999.
I sell services to clients in other states. Do I need GST?
Not necessarily. Inter-state supply of services is exempt from compulsory registration as long as your turnover is below the threshold. Inter-state supply of goods always needs registration.
What happens if I don't register when I should?
You can be penalised 10% of the tax due (minimum ₹10,000), or 100% of the tax in cases of deliberate evasion — plus the tax itself with interest.
Should I register voluntarily below the limit?
It often helps: you can claim input tax credit on purchases, sell on marketplaces and work with businesses that want GST invoices. The trade-off is monthly or quarterly returns.
