Overview

IEC (Import Export Code) is a unique 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry. Without a valid IEC, goods cannot be cleared through Indian customs, and banks will not process foreign remittances for import/export transactions.

The IEC is linked to your PAN — each PAN can have only one IEC, and the IEC number is the same as the business PAN. It has lifetime validity, but DGFT requires an annual update between April and June every year, even if nothing has changed, or the IEC may be deactivated.

Who needs it: exporters and importers of goods, food exporters (FSSAI + IEC), garment and textile exporters, software and IT service exporters, gems and jewellery, manufacturers selling abroad, global e-commerce sellers, freelancers receiving foreign payments, pharma and agricultural exporters.

Questions, answered

Is IEC mandatory even if I export just once?

Yes. Customs will not process your shipping bill or bill of entry without a valid IEC, even for a single shipment.

Can a proprietorship get an IEC?

Yes. A proprietor can apply directly with their personal PAN and Aadhaar — no company registration needed.

My IEC was deactivated because I missed the annual update.

Complete the pending update on the DGFT portal to reactivate it. We can do this for you for ₹299.

Do I need separate IECs for import and export?

No. One IEC covers both import and export.
