Udyam Registration is how a business in India gets officially recognised as a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise (MSME). Once registered, you get a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate from the Ministry of MSME.

That certificate is what banks, buyers and government schemes look for. This guide explains what MSME means, who can register, what you need, what it costs and how the process works — in the order you will need it.

Stay safe: the official portal is udyamregistration.gov.in. Registration there is free. Never share your Aadhaar OTP with anyone you don't know.

MSME and Udyam: the full form

  • MSME stands for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.
  • Udyam is the name of the current MSME registration system. It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar (UAM).
  • MoMSME is the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, which runs the Udyam portal. So "MSME registration", "Udyam registration" and "MSME certificate" all mean the same thing today.

Micro, small or medium? The 2025 limits

Your category depends on two numbers: your investment in plant, machinery or equipment and your annual turnover. Both must be within the limit.

The limits were revised with effect from 1 April 2025 (Notification S.O. 1364(E), dated 21 March 2025):

  • Micro: investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore
  • Small: investment up to ₹25 crore and turnover up to ₹100 crore
  • Medium: investment up to ₹125 crore and turnover up to ₹500 crore Export turnover is not counted when your turnover is calculated for classification. If you export, your category may be lower than your total turnover suggests.

Many websites still show the old 2020 limits (₹1 crore / ₹5 crore for micro). Those are out of date.

Who can register

Almost any business that makes goods or provides services can register, whatever its form:

  • proprietorship
  • partnership firm or LLP
  • private or public limited company
  • HUF, trust, society or co-operative Traders: retail and wholesale traders can also register (allowed since July 2021). But for traders, the benefit is limited to Priority Sector Lending from banks. Most other MSME benefits are meant for manufacturing and service businesses.

No PAN or GST? Very small informal businesses can use the Udyam Assist Platform, run by SIDBI, through a bank or NBFC. The certificate it issues counts as a micro enterprise for bank lending.

One business, one Udyam. A business can hold only one Udyam registration. If you do more than one activity, add them all to the same registration.

What you need

Udyam registration is paperless. You don't upload any documents. You enter details, and the portal checks them against Aadhaar, PAN and GST records.

Keep these ready:

  • Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory, with the mobile number linked to it (for the OTP)
  • PAN of the business (for a proprietorship, the owner's own PAN)
  • GSTIN, if your business is required to have one
  • bank account number and IFSC of the business account
  • business address and the date you started operations
  • NIC code for each activity you do
  • number of employees
  • investment and turnover figures (for existing businesses these are largely fetched from your ITR and GST data)

How much does Udyam registration cost?

The government charges nothing. Registration on udyamregistration.gov.in is free.

So why do people pay a consultant? Not for the form itself, but to avoid mistakes in it. The common ones are a wrong NIC code, the wrong category or activity type, a PAN or name mismatch, or a vague business description. A wrong entry can mean you miss benefits later, or have to correct the certificate.

At DigiFiling, our fee covers expert filing: we choose the right NIC codes, check your classification, file the form and verify the certificate before we send it to you. If you are confident with government forms, you can do it yourself for free. If you'd rather get it right the first time, let our experts handle your MSME registration.

Step-by-step: how to register on the Udyam portal

  • Step 1: Open the portal. Go to udyamregistration.gov.in and choose the option for new entrepreneurs who are not yet registered.
  • Step 2: Verify Aadhaar. Enter the Aadhaar number and the name as on Aadhaar, then verify the OTP sent to the linked mobile.
  • Step 3: Verify PAN. Select your type of organisation and enter the PAN. The portal validates it and fetches your details.
  • Step 4: Fill in business details. Enter the enterprise name, address, bank details, date of commencement, employee count and major activity.
  • Step 5: Choose your NIC codes. Pick the activity codes that match what your business actually does.
  • Step 6: Investment and turnover. Check the figures. Where your ITR and GST data are available, they are fetched automatically.
  • Step 7: Submit with OTP. Your Udyam Registration Number is generated when you submit. The e-certificate usually follows on email within a few days. You can download or reprint the certificate any time from the same portal using your Udyam number.

The tricky parts of the form

Major activity: manufacturing or services?

You must pick one major activity for your unit, Manufacturing or Services. Choose the one that brings in most of your revenue. Retail and wholesale traders fall under services, in the trading option.

NIC code

The NIC (National Industrial Classification) code describes your exact activity. There are hundreds of codes, and this is the most common place for mistakes. Pick the closest match for every activity you actually do, not just the first one that looks right.

IEC (Import Export Code)

The form may ask about your Import Export Code. IEC is a separate registration from DGFT, and Udyam does not give you one. If you import or export, get your IEC first and enter it. If you don't, answer accordingly.

Benefits of MSME registration

  • Faster payments (45-day rule). If you are a registered micro or small enterprise, buyers must pay you within 15 days, or within the agreed period up to 45 days if there is a written agreement. Under Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act, a buyer who pays late cannot claim that expense in the same year. This gives you strong leverage on overdue invoices. It does not cover medium enterprises or traders.
  • Delayed payment complaints. Registered micro and small enterprises can file complaints about late payments on the MSME Samadhaan portal.
  • Collateral-free loans. Under the CGTMSE scheme, banks can give loans to micro and small enterprises backed by a government guarantee instead of property. Since 1 April 2025 the guarantee ceiling is ₹10 crore.
  • Priority sector lending. Banks treat MSME loans as priority sector lending, which makes credit easier to access.
  • Government schemes and tenders. Many central and state schemes, subsidies and public procurement benefits ask for a Udyam certificate.
  • Credibility. A government-issued certificate with a permanent number makes your business easier to verify for buyers and lenders. Exact benefits depend on your category, activity and the rules of each scheme.

Udyam vs other registrations

Udyam does not replace other licences. It sits alongside them.

  • Udyam (MSME): issued by the Ministry of MSME. Recognises you as an MSME and gives access to MSME benefits.
  • GST: issued through the GST system. Needed to collect and pay GST.
  • FSSAI: issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Required for every food business.
  • Trade License: issued by your municipal corporation or local body. Permission to run a trade from a specific premises.
  • IEC: issued by DGFT. Required to import or export. Food businesses: an MSME certificate is not a food licence. You still need FSSAI. Read why every food business needs FSSAI.

Trade license: Udyam and a trade license are different. One does not replace the other, and the documents your municipality asks for vary by city.

GST: if you are setting up your GST, our GST Portal Guide walks through registration and login.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • registering on a lookalike website instead of udyamregistration.gov.in
  • using an Aadhaar that is not linked to an active mobile number
  • a mismatch between the name on PAN and the name entered
  • picking a wrong or incomplete NIC code
  • choosing manufacturing when your business is really a service (or the other way round)
  • creating a second Udyam registration for the same business instead of updating the first

After registration: renewal and updates

There is no renewal. A Udyam registration is permanent. But keep your details up to date, such as your address, activities, bank account or contact details, by logging in to the portal.

Your category can change over time. As your investment and turnover change, your classification is updated using your ITR and GST data.
