| Who | Usual form | Due date (FY 2025-26) |
|---|---|---|
| Salaried, one house property | ITR-1 / ITR-2 | 31 July 2026 |
| Freelancers and proprietors | ITR-3 / ITR-4 | 31 July 2026 |
| Firms and LLPs | ITR-5 | 31 July, or 31 October if audited |
| Companies | ITR-6 | 31 October 2026 |
Under the new tax regime, income up to ₹12 lakh is effectively tax-free for residents (₹12.75 lakh for salaried people after the standard deduction). The old regime can still be better if you have large deductions — we compare both.
The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaces the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026. Returns for FY 2025-26 are still filed under the old Act; we track the changes for the years ahead.
Missed the date? A belated or revised return can be filed until 31 December, and an updated return (ITR-U) within four years, with additional tax.

Questions, answered
What is the last date to file ITR for FY 2025-26?
31 July 2026 for most individuals not requiring audit, and 31 October 2026 for audit cases and companies, unless extended.
Which tax regime is better for me?
The new regime suits most people with few deductions — income up to ₹12 lakh is effectively tax-free. With large deductions such as home loan interest and 80C, the old regime can still be cheaper. We calculate both.
I missed the due date. Can I still file?
Yes. A belated return can be filed until 31 December with a late fee of up to ₹5,000 (₹1,000 if income is up to ₹5 lakh). After that, an updated return is possible within four years with extra tax.
Do I need to file if my income is below the taxable limit?
It is not always mandatory, but filing helps with refunds, loans and visas, and is required in some cases, such as high deposits or foreign travel spending.
What changes with the Income-tax Act, 2025?
It replaces the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026 with simpler language and a single 'tax year'. Tax rates and most rules carry over. Returns for FY 2025-26 still follow the old Act.
