GST registration can be cancelled voluntarily when the business is closed, sold, merged, its constitution changes, or turnover falls below the threshold for a voluntary registrant. The application is filed in Form GST REG-16.
Before cancellation:
- all pending GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns must be filed
- input tax credit on stock and capital goods held on the date of cancellation must be paid back
- any outstanding tax, interest and late fee must be cleared
After cancellation: a final return, GSTR-10, must be filed within three months of the cancellation order. Missing it can lead to a notice and penalty.
If your registration was cancelled by the department (for example, for non-filing), we can help with revocation instead.
