What is MSME / Udyam
MSME Registration — India's Most Powerful Business Certificate
MSME stands for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises. It is a
registration/certification provided by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises,
Government of India. Since July 2020, MSME registration is officially called Udyam
Registration and is done on the official portal udyamregistration.gov.in.
Any business — be it a proprietorship, partnership, company, LLP, or any other entity — engaged
in manufacturing, trading, or services can register as an MSME. The registration is
completely free of government charges and grants your business access to an
extraordinary range of government benefits — from priority loans to subsidies on patents,
trademarks, electricity bills, and even ISO certification.
With over 6.3 crore MSMEs registered in India and contributing 30% of India's
GDP, the government has structured an entire ecosystem of schemes and support specifically for
MSME-registered businesses. Registering is literally leaving money and opportunities on the
table if you haven't done it yet.
💡 Important: Old Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) registration has been replaced by
Udyam Registration. If your business has an old UAM number, it must be migrated to Udyam on
udyamregistration.gov.in. DigiFiling handles UAM-to-Udyam migration as well.
MSME Classification 2025
3 Categories of MSME — Which One is Your Business?

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions — MSME / Udyam Registration
Is Udyam Registration free? What does
DigiFiling charge? +
The Government of India charges NIL (zero) fee for Udyam Registration on
the official portal. DigiFiling charges ₹499 as a professional service fee for expert
assistance — which includes correct NIC code selection, Aadhaar verification guidance,
accurate form filling, certificate verification, and post-filing scheme consultation.
You save much more in avoided errors and unlocked benefits than the ₹499 fee.
Is Udyam Registration certificate valid for
lifetime? Does it need renewal? +
Udyam Registration has no fixed validity period — it is a permanent
registration and does NOT require annual renewal. However, you must update your turnover
and investment details annually via the Udyam portal based on your previous year's ITR.
If your turnover exceeds the MSME thresholds, your registration gets auto-upgraded or
auto-cancelled by the system.
Can a startup with no sales / zero revenue
register for MSME? +
Yes! There is no minimum turnover or investment requirement for Udyam
Registration. A brand-new business with zero sales and minimal equipment can register as
a Micro Enterprise. In fact, we recommend registering as soon as you start your business
— the benefits (especially loans and scheme eligibility) are available from day one of
registration.
Can a trading/retail business register for
MSME? Or is it only for manufacturers? +
Both manufacturing AND service sector businesses can register for
MSME/Udyam. Retail traders, wholesale traders, service providers, consultants, IT
companies, restaurants, and any other business type can register. Note: For
wholesale/retail traders, Udyam registration was made available from July 2021 —
previously they were excluded.
I have a Private Limited Company. Can it
register for Udyam? +
Yes. All types of business entities can register: Proprietorship,
Partnership Firm, LLP, Private Limited Company, Public Limited Company, Co-operative
Society, Trust, and HUF. For companies and LLPs, the Aadhaar of the
director/partner/authorized signatory is used for authentication, along with the
company's PAN and GSTIN.
What is the difference between MSME
Registration and Startup India registration? +
MSME (Udyam) Registration is based on investment and turnover criteria —
for any business, new or old. Benefits include loans, subsidies, and procurement
preferences. Startup India (DPIIT Recognition) is for innovative startups below ₹100
Crore turnover — benefits include tax exemptions, faster patent processing, and
regulatory relaxations. Many businesses qualify for BOTH and should get both
registrations. DigiFiling handles both.
